Story 07/12/15

It is May 10th 2016, a humid night with light rain at the ‘Turk Telekom Arena’. It was the Uefa Europa League Final between Tottenham Hotspur and Borussia Dortmund. Tottenham’s last trophy was in 2008 against Chelsea and the last European trophy was against Anderlecht in 1984. Spurs had twice been denied trophies in 2009 and 2015 vs Manchester United and Chelsea. This game meant a lot to us.

Borussia Dortmund are a massive German side and were one to be feared in this game. They had a fierce attacking prowess with like of Aubameyang, Reus and Kagawa. The first twenty minutes of the game was very even, like a chess game, we were both trying to figure each other out. Thirty three minutes played, we had a corner which struck the cross bar of the head of Jan Vertonghen. Chance goes begging and Dortmund will come on the counter attack 2 v 1, the one being me and Reus and Aubameyang being the two. Behind me was the increasingly loud Dortmund fans, they have great fans and great atmosphere which put me off. The shot by Reus was hit and I saved it, but the ball trickled past the line as I chased it back. It felt like I had been shot in the stomach. By half time it 3-0 to Dortmund and there was just nothing we could do. In the changing room, me and ‘Poch’ had to get the team motivated for a crucial 45 minutes. Jus

Great Expectations Chapter 5,6,7

Chapter 5 begins by some soldier coming to the house during their dinner party. It caused everyone to rise from the table in confusion. Pip answered the door worried that the police where after him. Relief came for Pip as the police were looking for the blacksmith[Joe] to fix their handcuffs. Mr.Pumblechook was offering the sergeant another glass of win as if it was his wine and he was the host. Pip, Joe, Mr.Wopsle and the soldiers went out to the marshes to catch the convict. The then find two escaped convicts fighting and take them to the docks to the prisoner ship. The convict who Pip first met took blame for stealing the food, drink and whittles. He saves Pip from getting in any trouble with the police, Joe or his sister.

Chapter 6 Pip talks about the relief he felt after being ‘exonerated’ by the prisoner.

Chapter 7 starts with Pip saying he was in the churchyard and he was just about smart enough to spell his parents names out. He also says that one night next to his chimney he was making his greatest effort to write a letter to Joe. There was no point in him writing the letter

Comparison. Two Americans and South Africans killed in police training centre.

Both of these sources from The Guardian and The Telegraph use very nearly the same title to discuss the fact that three men were killed in a police training facility. They only change the fact that The Guardian says it was in Jordan.  The Telegraph includes the fact that the training facility was set up by Americans, it suggests that they are trying to possibly criticise Americans by including their country. The Telegraph says that a Jordanian police officer ‘opened fire’ which suggests that it was done purposely. The Guardian then says that the shooting was done accidentally. The editor of the Guardian Newspaper could be saying this because he wants to protect his country from people possibly criticising them if he is from Jordan. Both sources mention that the incident was on the 10th year anniversary of al Qaeda suicide bombings which was one of the worst militant attacks in Jordan’s history. Writers of The Guardian mentioned that it seemed to bear a similarity to an incident where guns were turned on Americans in Afghanistan.

Summary: Chapter 1 and 2 Great Expectations

In the first chapter of Volume 1 of Great Expectations, Pip, a young orphan who has only his sister and her husband left in his life. Five of his siblings died, he was visiting their graves where he meets a convict who makes him get a file and ‘wittles’ so he can get the metal leg irons off his feet. The convict threatens to cut out his heart and liver if he doesn’t do so. Pip then goes home to be shouted at by his sister, she was worried about where he was and what he was doing. Pip was then sent to bed, later that night he sneaked into the pantry to steal some bread, cheese, mincemeat and some brandy. He then leaves the pantry what it looked like before.

What is the relationship between text and spoken language?

The relationship between text and spoken language and text language is that they both influence each other in the way we speak and text. In this we will explore relations like omission, para linguistics and homophones etc.

When people text each other, they usually tend to use abbreviations. Abbreviations are used to shorten our words to send them quicker. We can abbreviate our text as we usually are texting in an informal setting and the other person/people will still be able to understand us. We are often able to shorten our words as no meaning is lost in what we say. This is known as omission. Examples of this can be shown in my text messages.

When people speak one to one in person they can show emotion through smiling, frowning or raising your eyebrows. This is in my opinion another form of speaking. Speaking, texting and using facial emotion. Expressing your emotion through facial expression may also be known as para linguistics.  Being able to understand para linguistics is a good thing when communicating. It shows an understanding between two or more people conversing which saves talking. Examples of this can be frowning(upset/angry), raising eyebrows(shock/confused) etc. Para linguistics can link to text language through emoticons or emojis as they are more commonly known. The smiling emoticon ‘?’ means that you are happy or excited about something. ‘?’ this emojis shows that the person sending it is angry because of the red face, downward eyebrows and frown. There are many more emojis which link to real life but would take too long to explain. Emojis are a great way of communicating as they show para linguistics that you would be able to shows face to face but not through messaging.

Omission is another way that spoken language and text language relates as we use omission in both speaking and texting. Omission is shown in text when we miss out letters in our typing that are unnecessary to write as the listener/s will still understand us. We wouldn’t purposely miss out letters if it didn’t make sense because it wouldn’t be called omission.

‘Jus stop talking shit’ in this short phrase one letter at the end of ‘jus’ is omitted because we can shorten it and still give the same meaning. That sentence means the same as ‘Just stop talking shit’.

There are also links in spoken and text language in aural elements. Aural elements are things like your accent, volume and speed of speaking. All these things can be heard and understood

Analysing your transcript

Ibby used omission when says ‘This prick keep telling me’. He says it like that to keep his flow of speech going and to not have many interruptions by saying more words or full words. I think Ibby also feels it unecessary to speak standard English to Lis as he will understand him anyway. This is shown in my embedded quote missing out ‘on’ as omission.

Lis uses repitition when he says ‘Hold on, hold on’ I think this is used so Lis can get himself a chance to speak, Ibby may be interrupting Lis and Lis wants to shut him up.

Ibby uses slang twice in his first sentence ‘Prick and Fucking’ to maybe seem more agressive to be stronger in the argument. Ibby maybe feels more confortable around friends and there is a higher tolerance level. There’s a friendship trust he doesn’t have with teachers
