In the first chapter of Volume 1 of Great Expectations, Pip, a young orphan who has only his sister and her husband left in his life. Five of his siblings died, he was visiting their graves where he meets a convict who makes him get a file and ‘wittles’ so he can get the metal leg irons off his feet. The convict threatens to cut out his heart and liver if he doesn’t do so. Pip then goes home to be shouted at by his sister, she was worried about where he was and what he was doing. Pip was then sent to bed, later that night he sneaked into the pantry to steal some bread, cheese, mincemeat and some brandy. He then leaves the pantry what it looked like before.
